A pair of light brown flat thong sandals. Rice straw has been woven together to create the bed of the shoes and a piece of brown material forms the thong. It is attached to the front in the centre and two-thirds of the way back to both sides.

Artifact
The front of a pair of stilted thong shoes. The wood is dark brown and the grain of the wood is visible. The thong material is brown and was attached to the shoe through three holes (one at the front and two in the middle of the shoes).
Japanese Geta Footwear

Artifact
The front of a wooden comb with Japanese characters on the shaft. The teeth are perpendicular to the shaft and are the same brown colour. There is a wider piece of dark brown material at each end.

Sumatra

When Robert Rawlings left for Sumatra in 1890 to work for the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company, he was already an experienced driller and manager, skills which would be necessary in the remote jungles of South East Asia.

The oil boom that ignited the modern oil industry occurred in Oil Springs between 1858 and 1865. Petrolia had a slow start but the King Well of 1866 kickstarted an enormous oil boom that stretched into the early 1900s.

From 1858 onwards, the oil producers of Oil Springs transported their crude to the Great Western railhead in Wyoming. It was then shipped and refined in London and Hamilton.

Transporting oil has never been easy and though methods have evolved since Oil Springs’ first oil in 1858, problems continue in Canada to this day.
