Description

  • A pair of flat thong sandals made from rice straw, also known as zori. 
  • Brown material-wrapped rope forms the thong. 

Background Information

  • Purchased as a memento by Robert Rawlings who drilled in Sumatra on two contracts between 1880 and 1902.

  • A pair of light brown flat thong sandals. Rice straw has been woven together to create the bed of the shoes and a piece of brown material forms the thong. It is attached to the front in the centre and two-thirds of the way back to both sides.

  • The bottom of pair of flat thong sandals. The sole is brown and has been sewn to the upper part. There is a piece of black material towards the toe of each shoe
  • A pair of light brown flat thong sandals. There are white socks with a split toe to allow the toes to sit on either side of the thong.
