Japanese Geta Footwear

Description

  • Pair of stilted wooden thong-type shoes, called geta. 
  • Brown fabric-wrapped rope forms the thong. 
  • A flat board is attached to two supporting pieces. 
  • Worn with informal clothing, usually in bad weather so that the platform prevents feet from getting wet and muddy. 

Background Information

  • Purchased as a memento by Robert Rawlings who drilled in Sumatra on two contracts between 1880 and 1902.
