Satsuma Cup

Description

  • Satsuma ware tea cup made in Japan around 1900.
  • Handle is shaped like a spotted dragon.
  • Scenes are painted all around the outside of the cup, mostly in blues and golds
  • Scene possibly depicts the story of the Eight Immortals crossing the sea. The Eight Immortals included He Xiangu, the only female of the group. Together they defeated the dragon-king of the West. 
  • Inside of the cup is white with two haloed figures at the bottom.

Background Information

  • Purchased as a memento by William McRae on his way home from drilling in Java, around 1915.
  • Satsuma wares were predominanly fabricated as export items appealing to Westerners.
