Hammered Silver Assuit (Shawl)

Description

  • Shawl of white netting with a geometric design of individual pieces of hammered silver. 
  • This type of piece, a cotton or linen mesh decorated with metal, is called an assuit after Asyut where it is made. 
  • Centre design is of three large diamonds with four smaller diamonds. Two bands of a chevron pattern border the sides of the centre pattern and two bands of zigzags finish off the piece at either end. 

Background Information

  • Purchased as a memento by William McRae on his return from drilling in Java (Indonesia) around 1915.
