Chinese Water-Pipe

Description

  • Brass Chinese water-pipe
  • Consists of a rectangular, decorated water container, a draw tube from which the user would suck the smoke, and a hinged tobacco container. 
  • Also includes a pair of tweezers and a small whisk. 
  • Front of the water container is inscribed with a scene of fruit and flowers. 
  • Back and sides of the water container are inscribed with Chinese songs and prayers. 

Background Information

  • Purchased as a memento by William McRae on his return from drilling in Java (Indonesia) around 1915.
