Letter from the R.M.S. Princess Irene

Description

  • Lunch menu, written in German and English, from the R.M.S. Princess Irene; top half is missing.
  • Menu can also be folded in half, sealed with wax, and sent as a postcard.
  • Robert Rawlings wrote a letter to his mother on February 15, 1901 from the Red Sea.
  • The letter reads: "On board the R.M.S. Princess Irene. My dear Mother: we have had a safe and pleasant voyage thus far. I am in good health. I hope you are all well. The weather is very warm. I think it must be about 85º or 90º in the shade. We get good food on board as you will see by reading the other side of this card. We have a jolly lot of passengers on board, most of them speak English. We expect to reach Singapore in about 10 days. I am wearing my white clothes now. Some of the passengers are bound for Sumatra. The sea is very smooth. We find it very warm in our cabins at night. I bought a Kodac and have taken a number of photographs which I intend to have developed from time to time. I suppose the weather at home will be much warmer. I hope the medicine for your rhumatism has done you good. I have left orders to have $50 per month sent home for a time, and you may use all you wish out of that. Some of the passengers are very nice. They are of many nationalities: English, French, German, Danes, Poles, (?), Italians, etc. Well mother, I will close for this time. So good bye. I send my love to you all. Your son Robert.
