Artifact

Seated Anubis Figure

Description

  • Figurine made of steatite
  • An Anubis figure seated on a throne, arms resting on his thighs
  • Some very basic incising decorates the sides of the throne and the back.

Background Information

  • Purchased as a memento by John Growder who drilled for oil in Egypt for eight years, from around 1923.
  • Anubis was a very ancient god of the dead. After the Old Kingdom (the "Age of the Pyramids"), he was regarded as the god who presided over embalming, ensuring that the body would be preserved. He was also seen as a sort of celestial guide-dog, who ensured that the spirit of the deceased would find its way safely to its eternal abode.
