Description

  • Orangeware vessel with a cream slip and red painted decoration
  • Stirrup-spout handle resembles a riding stirrup in shape
  • Moulded portrait-head vessel with three-dimensional facial features and painted headdress decorations 
  • This type of earthenware vessel is given the name of "Huaco" in Peru 
  • Made by the Indigenous peoples of Peru

  • Purchased as a memento in Peru by Charles Wallen.
  • This type of pottery is usually linked to ceremonial, religious, or artistic uses rather than utilitarian due to their high provenience in burials and temples. 
  • Two-toned red and white colouration is typical of Moche pottery, a northern coastal Peruvian culture
