Strap-Handle Jug

Description

  • Blackware jug with strap handle extending from the neck to the shoulder of the vessel
  • Body of the jug is shaped like a llama's head with some kind of harness
  • Details are raised rather than incised
  • Back of the jug is smooth
  • Spout is flared
  • This type of earthenware vessel is given the name of "Huaco" in Peru 
  • Made by the Indigenous peoples of Peru 

Background Information

  • Purchased as a memento in Peru by Charles Wallen.
  • This type of pottery is usually linked to ceremonial, religious, or artistic uses rather than utilitarian due to their high provenience in burials and temples.
