Work Report, July 1898

Description

  • Report of the work being conducted at Well No. 9 Keban (?), presumably near Palembang, Sumatra (Indonesia).
  • The report was written by Robert Rawlings, and covers a period from July 1, 1898 until August 11, 1898.
  • It appears that drilling began on July 12, when he begins to make note of the size of the casing, the depth of the well, and each day's advancement.
  • After July 12, he makes note of the types of formations through which they're drilling: "Very hard rock"; "Shale containing oil"; "Gray shale", etc.

Background Information

  • International Drillers had to be very knowledgeable about the different layers of soil and rock they would encounter in order to predict when they would hit oil. It was quite easy to drill right through an oil formation and not realise it had been missed.
  • Part of a collection of mementoes belonging to Robert Rawlings who drilled in Sumatra on two contracts between 1880 and 1902.
