Letter from the R.M.S. Princess Irene

Description

  • Lunch menu, written in German and English, from the R.M.S. Princess Irene.  
  • Menu can also be folded in half, sealed with wax, and sent as a postcard. 
  • Robert Rawlings wrote a letter to his mother on March 22, 1901 from the Indian Ocean. 
  • The letter reads: "Dear mother: I expect to reach Colombo Ceylon tonight. I am enjoying splendid health. I hope you are well. We have had a splendid voyage. Have not had a blow since I left home. I shall go ashore at Colombo. Your loving son, Rob. Love to you all. Address Palembang Sumatra."

Background Information

  • Part of a collection of mementoes belonging to Robert Rawlings who drilled in Sumatra on two contracts between 1880 and 1902.
