Kris Dagger and Wooden Sheath

Description

  • Poisonous dagger in a wooden sheath.
  • Wooden handle of the dagger is carved and curved and has an ornamental piece of metal at the attachment to the blade. 
  • Blade is created by alternating layers of different types of metals, giving the blade a swirling pattern.

Background Information

  • Purchased as a memento by Robert Rawlings who drilled in Sumatra on two contracts between 1880 and 1902. 
  • This type of dagger is called kris.
  • The dagger functions as both a weapon and a spiritual item.
  • Poison was supposedly infused into the blade during the forging process to ensure that any injury caused by the blade would be fatal.
