L'artefact
Blow gun
Description
- Blow gun made from the wood of the purple heart tree.
- The inner tube is made of reed which does not warp or become crooked.
- The sight used for aiming the gun is the front teeth of the agouti, a small rodent-like animal similar to a rabbit.
- It is used to propel darts which are dipped in Hurali poison, often referred to as curare.
Informations d'arrière-plan
- The poison was made from a mixture of bark scrapings and snake venom, which is boiled in water for two days, then strained and left to evaporate into a heavy paste.
- The poison does not pass through the digestive system, ensuring that animals killed with the darts are safe to eat.
- The potency of the poison is tested by counting the number of leaps a frog would take after being pricked.
- Death from a dart dipped in curare and fired from a blow gun would take one to two minutes for a bird, up to 10 minutes for a small animal and up to 20 minutes for a large animal.
