L'artefact

Stele

Description

  • Black steatite mini-stele with a rounded top and a raised relief carving.
  • At the top, two figures, possibly baboons, are depicted facing each other with a small stele in between them.
  • Three rows of hieroglyphic text occupy the lower half.

Informations d'arrière-plan

  • Purchased as a memento by John Growder who drilled for oil in Egypt for eight years, from around 1923.
  • Baboons were regarded as a symbol of the god Thoth, god of widsom. They are often depicted worshipping the sun (Re). In nature, baboons are often seen to start to gibber when the sun rises, "greeting" the god.
