Satsuma Cup
Description
Satsuma ware tea cup made in Japan around 1900.
Handle is shaped like a spotted dragon.
Scenes are painted all around the outside of the cup, mostly in blues and golds
Scene possibly depicts the story of the Eight Immortals crossing the sea. The Eight Immortals included He Xiangu, the only female of the group. Together they defeated the dragon-king of the West.
Inside of the cup is white with two haloed figures at the bottom.
Informations d'arrière-plan
Purchased as a memento by William McRae on his way home from drilling in Java, around 1915.
Satsuma wares were predominanly fabricated as export items appealing to Westerners.
