Artifact
Raft in the Water
Description
- Three men stand on a raft and two men paddle a canoe, as several large ships can be seen off in the distance.
Background Information
- Part of a photograph collection belonging to George Rawlings who drilled for oil in Africa and South America from 1910 to 1932.
- Much of the equipment used in Equador had to be shipped in pieces, in crates. These crates were lowered from the large ships onto rafts which would haul them onto shore. The equipment could then be transported by donkey to the oil fields. Listen to Stewart Rawlings recount the story here.
