Carved Cedar Chest

Description

  • Carved cedar chest 
  • Carvings tell a story 
  • Top of the chest shows three old men standing outside, under a flowering tree, with a child. 
  • Front of the chest shows possibly two scenes as the centre figure is repeated. The scene on the left shows one figure reaching towards the other two figures. The second scene shows a figure holding a scroll out to an old man. 

Background Information

  • Purchased in Hong Kong by Bloss Sutherland, on his way home from British Borneo (modern Sarawak, Malaysia) in 1932. 
  • Bloss Sutherland saw the carved chests and had one commissioned. It was carved overnight and ready for his departure the next morning. (Listen to the story here.)
