Cairo Citadel, Egypt

Description

  • The Saladin Citadel of Cairo was built during the medieval period on the Mokattam hill in the centre of Cairo as a fortification during the Crusades. 
  • On the summit of the citadel sits the mosque of Muhammad Ali, built in the early 19th century. 

Background Information

  • Part of a photograph collection belonging to Ernest Kells who worked in Persia (modern Iran) from 1922 until 1931.
