Mother and Daughter, Borneo

Description

  • An older woman seated on a wooden box next to a younger woman kneeling on the floor.
  • Both women are holding a type of drum traditionally made by the Batak people of Indonesia. The top of the drum is covered with small drops of resin which serves to tune the drum. 

Background Information

  • Part of a photograph collection belonging to Robert Rawlings, who drilled for oil in Sumatra from 1890 until 1902.
