Drilling Contract

Description

  • Drilling contract for W.O. Gillespie to drill in the Dutch East Indies (modern South East Asia) for the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij (Batavian Oil Company, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell).
  • Blueish thick paper, folded into quarters length-wise.
  • Pre-printed contract that has been filled in by type-writer.

Background Information

  • William O. Gillespie, International Driller.
  • Contract for three years, beginning on the date when Gillespie first landed in Singapore.
  • Second-class passage from Petrolia, Ontario to the Dutch East Indies will be paid for by the company as well as the return upon completion of the contract. However, paragraph five appears to state that the company will only pay for the trip back to Canada if Gillespie returns to work for the company within six months.
  • Paid 500 guilders per month (about $350 CDN based on modern exchange rate).
  • If Gillespie were to break the contract, he would not be given the fare home and he would have to pay 700 guilders to the company in return for the fare over.
